Out of office: Isherlohn

A run down of top tips for travelling to the German town of Isherlohn on business

How do you get to Iserlohn and how is the public transport in the city?

Iserlohn can be reached directly via the Autobahn 46, so there is quick and easy access to the surrounding area. In half an hour you can reach Dortmund, the nearest big city. Hagen, Schwerte and Menden are all about 15 minutes away by car.

The city is very well connected by various bus lines. They leave every half hour, and you can get everywhere through the network. A lot can also be reached on foot. Many shopping amenities are often around the corner. There are enough taxis in Iserlohn, but of course they have their price. Those who have to get through the city fast and cheap can also use a bicycle, but muscle power is needed for the hills…

Do you have any suggestions for business hotels in Iserlohn for a couple of nights?

Iserlohn offers various hotels that host large events. But if you are only looking for a place to sleep, you can stay at the CampusGarden or at the idyllic Four Seasons at the Seilersee. The Stadthotel is very central and suitable for every taste.

Fuchs und Hase is a nice cafe in the city where you can chat, collaborate or work together. There are also many great places that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. In general you will find many good spots for a cosy afternoon.

What are some the industries associated with Iserlohn?

Iserlohn’s most successful entrepreneurs are Edelhoff and Lobbe, which handle waste disposal. In addition, there are other successful companies around Iserlohn like Grohe, Medice and Schlueter-Systems.

Every year the MK fair takes place in Iserlohn, where companies from around the town present themselves. This is particularly interesting for young people. In addition, there are regular digitalisation events where entrepreneurs from Iserlohn meet. The university is involved in the Campus Symposium, which is a complete success every year.

Where would you recommend for a lunch or dinner meeting in Iserlohn?

Cafe del Sol offers incredible schnitzel and tasty drinks.

To invite a customer to dinner, Carsten’s Restaurant would be the right choice, as the meals are of high quality, freshly prepared and taste excellent. It is more expensive, but worth the price.

For a nice evening with friends, I can recommend Base Burger, where you can have fantastic burgers and great drinks in a modern atmosphere.

Are there any challenging aspects or downsides of Iserlohn business travellers should consider beforehand?

Iserlohn is a small town and has everything you need. However, you would probably prefer Dortmund for parties and big shopping trips. There are many young people on campus who have the same interests and work on projects together; however, there is no hotspot for young people or the latest trends. Therefore a trip to Berlin is worthwhile.

But there is the beautiful Seilersee, endless meadows for extensive walks and fresh air. Iserlohn is very green and has a lot to offer, but it is all very rural and quiet.

Why would you recommend Iserlohn as a place to do business?

In Iserlohn people know everything about each other. Although it is a city with many successful companies, it is like a small village. If you need something, you can go to Dortmund without further ado.

In big cities you often lose yourself in all the traffic, noise and dirt. To escape from all the bustle and get inspiration, you can clear your head in a beautiful landscape.
